The Neighbourhood

Among hills and valleys, on the summit of the Santa Helena Mountains, we find Maçãs de Dona Maria which is located on the right bank of the Ribeira d'Alge. It owes its name to the fact that it belonged to D. Maria Pais Ribeira, mistress of D. Sancho I of Portugal, who donated it to her. Maçãs de Dona Maria is mentioned for the first time in a documentation of D. Sancho I, in 1200. Later, in 1434, King D. Duarte granted the 1st Marquis of Vila Real the prerogative to appoint alcaides, judges, notaries, and other important figures in various places, among which was Maçãs de Dona Maria. In 1614 the crown took possession of the place and it was transferred to the house of the Infantado (in the person of Infante D. Pedro) and this possession was kept until 1838. In 1836 the municipality of Maçãs Dª Maria was enlarged with those of Arega and Aguda. However, in 1855 it was also extinguished, and the three parishes that comprised it were incorporated in Figueiró dos Vinhos. In 1895 the parish of Maçãs Dª Maria was annexed to the county of Ansião and in 1898 became part of the Alvaiázere county. Of its ancient nobility remain the Manor House with the coat of arms of the Pimenteis Teixeiras family and the Pillory.

All windows and doors must be closed when leaving the apartment or during rainfall. Please also keep the building and apartment doors locked when away from the apartment. 8.
