O bairro
The apartment is in the city centre, downtown, literally translated as Baixa. On the river’s level, it is an elegant district which comprises the grid of streets north of Praça do Comércio, roughly between the Cais do Sodré and the Alfama district beneath the Lisbon Castle, and extends northwards towards the Rossio and Figueira squares and the Avenida da Liberdade. It is near the Chiado neighbourhood, also a lovely district with charming old bookshops, local and major international fashion brands, giving it a lively cosmopolitan ambience at any time of the day. There you'll find Café Brasileira, one of the oldest places of the city with its remarkable interior. Another local highlights: - ROSSIO: It has been a meeting place for people of Lisbon for centuries, indeed the heart of our city. Here some of the cafés and shops date back to the 18th century, like the Café Nicola, where the poet Bocage used to meet friends and discuss the social and political future of Portugal. Other traditional shops include the Pastelaria Suíça and the Ginjinha, where this traditional Lisbon wild cherry liquor can be tasted. - AVENIDA DA LIBERDADE: The most luxurious avenue and where you can easily loose yourself in this tree-lined boulevard noted for its tailoring shops and cafes. It was opened in the 19th century and inspired by the Paris’ Champs Elysées, connecting Rossio central square to the Marquês de Pombal and the north part of the city. - PRAÇA DO COMÉRCIO: impossible to miss it! Also called Terreiro do Paço, due to its previous original spot where the royal palace was located until the massive destruction caused by the 1755 earthquake. It was recently considered one of the most beautiful and perfectly dimensioned squares of Europe. The Archway of Augusta street ornates it and can be found at the end of this major pedestrian and shopping street. - ELEVATOR DE SANTA JUSTA: Santa Justa elevator was inaugurated in 1902 and built by a Portuguese-French engineer Mesnier du Ponsard who had studied with the Eiffel architect. Using the steam energy in its early days, it takes you up to admire the downtown landscape but it also has a corridor passage to the Carmo Convent and museum. -GARRET STREET: The easiest way walking to get to Baixa-Chiado is through Garret street, with remarkable historical shops: Bertrand Bookshop, distinguished by the Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest bookshop founded in 1732; the historical cafe Brasileira, esplanade and marvelous interior, forever connected to the Portuguese great poet Fernando Pessoa and the revolutionary 20th tertulias; Santini ice cream shop; Armazéns do Chiado, central and busy shopping center. - ALFAMA: an authentic and quiet neighborhood in Portugal. You will be in the heart of Fado National music. Don’t forget to appreciate all the museums, restaurants, and viewpoints spread around this traditional quarter! - SÃO JORGE CASTLE: The monument that crowns the city for over a millennium is the actual birthplace of Lisbon.
Como se deslocar
You have the tramway number 28, one of the ex-libris of the cities just outside the door on the main street, which takes you all around the old town, up and down its hills. You are at Baixa (downtown), so you have several metros, buses, and trains close by and a straight walk to the riverside also brings you to the boat stations.
