O bairro
Between Sintra’s romantic atmosphere and the raw beauty of the Atlantic Ocean, Azenhas do Mar offers one of the most striking settings on the Portuguese coast. Located around 25 km from Lisbon, this small whitewashed village rises dramatically above the cliffs, creating a unique landscape of traditional houses, rugged rock formations, and sweeping sea views. At the foot of the village, a small beach can be reached by a staircase carved into the rocks, offering an intimate spot to enjoy the coastal scenery and the peaceful rhythm of local life. The location makes it easy to combine relaxing days by the ocean with visits to Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its palaces, historic gardens, and distinctive architecture. The nearby Sintra-Cascais Natural Park also invites guests to explore scenic walking trails, dramatic viewpoints, and some of the region’s most beautiful beaches. With local seafood restaurants, small village shops, and an authentic atmosphere, Azenhas do Mar is an excellent base for discovering Sintra, Colares, Cabo da Roca, and the Atlantic coastline, while still being close enough for a day trip to Lisbon. It is an ideal destination for guests looking for nature, history, gastronomy, and a peaceful stay in one of Portugal’s most iconic coastal villages.
