The neighbourhood
This eastern side of the Algarve is quite different from the western and central areas as the beaches are a lot flatter and backed by dunes, not cliffs. The water tends to be a few degrees warmer as well. It is great for all ages - the beaches are fantastic for children and access is excellent for people with mobility problems. There are also plenty of restaurants, bars, and cafes to suit all tastes and budgets. It is an easy drive from Faro airport along the A22 to Monte Gordo and is justifiably becoming ever more popular with visitors throughout the year - not just in the summer. Monte Gordo is a large town, spaciously laid out with wide streets. The high-rise hotels and apartment blocks are a characteristic feature of the Monte Gordo landscape but they don’t detract from the overall feel of the town because it is very well laid out. Suggested activity ideas: - Golfing at one of the many golf courses in the area. - Water sports of all kinds, however, kitesurfing and windsurfing seem to be the most popular options among visitors! - Jeep safaris to inland lakes; are always a fun activity for people of all ages! - Leisurely boat trips along the Guadiana River -Visiting the small and picturesque village of Cacela Velha which is situated on top of a hill with a view to the easternmost lagoon of the Ria Formosa lagoon.
Getting around
Getting around is relatively easy to do on foot. To explore the nearby towns, hiring a rental car, or using an Uber, is a great way to go. It will allow you to access many remote beaches or traditional villages that have little or no public transport options.
