The neighbourhood

Our apartment is located right in the heart of the Belém quarter, famous for its historical monuments and museums! This special neighborhood gained its importance thanks to the harbor where the boats that sailed off to discover the “new world” during the 15th & 16th centuries. Back in 1497, the explorer Vasco da Gama and his fleet left the Belém harbor and took 1 year to sail to what is now the country of India! Some popular attractions that can be found in Belém: - TORRE DE BELEM: The tower was built between 1515-1521 and it is considered to be the symbol of Lisbon. It is a prominent example of the Portuguese Manueline style. - MOSTEIRO DOS JERÓNIMOS: The monastery is, along with the Tower of Belém, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most visited monuments of Portugal. - PASTÉIS DE BELEM: The famous custard tarts of the country were first baked at this pastry shop and can still be enjoyed from the now popular tiled pastry shop. Don’t forget to sprinkle some cinnamon and sugar on the top of the pastéis! - PADRÃO DOS DESCOBRIMENTOS: The "Monument to Discoveries" is located along the Tejo river which commemorates Portuguese "Age of Discoveries" of the 15th and 16th centuries, and the explorers that set off to trade with India and Orient. - CENTRO CULTURAL DE BELEM: It is the largest building (20th c.) with cultural facilities in Portugal and it hosts a contemporary art museum inside. - DARWIN'S: A great restaurant at the Champalimaud
