The neighbourhood
For a quiet and peaceful vacation with easy access to the rest of the Algarve coast, Portimão is a great choice. It is the largest city in the western Algarve and is known for its excellent beaches with long stretches of sand and warm, calm waters, which make it a very attractive vacation destination. Despite its considerable size, the area has a discreet and laid-back atmosphere, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the sun and sea breeze. Very close by, you can find the historic city center, which has a distinctly Portuguese atmosphere, with squares full of outdoor cafes, connected by pedestrian shopping streets, and a number of churches scattered throughout. This region can easily be explored in half a day.
Getting around
Getting around is relatively easy to do on foot. To explore the nearby towns, hiring a rental car, or using an Uber, is a great way to go. It will allow you to access many remote beaches or traditional villages that have little or no public transport options.
