The neighbourhood
Altura is a tranquil seaside village located in the municipality of Castro Marim, in the eastern Algarve, near the Spanish border. Known for its relaxed atmosphere and long, golden sandy beach, Praia da Alagoa, Altura is a popular destination for families and those seeking a quieter, more laid-back alternative to the busier resort towns of the Algarve. The beach is wide and gently sloping, with warm, calm waters — ideal for swimming and sunbathing. A wooden boardwalk runs along the dunes, perfect for leisurely walks and offering easy access to the beach while preserving the natural environment. Altura retains much of its local charm, with low-rise buildings, traditional restaurants serving fresh seafood, and small shops. In the summer, it becomes livelier, welcoming both Portuguese holidaymakers and international visitors, but it generally maintains a peaceful, authentic feel year-round. It’s also a great base for exploring the Ria Formosa Natural Park, the historic town of Castro Marim, and the nearby city of Vila Real de Santo António. The Spanish city of Ayamonte is just across the Guadiana River, making for an easy day trip.
Getting around
Getting around is relatively easy to do on foot. To explore the nearby towns, hiring a rental car or using Uber is a great way to go. It will allow you to access many remote beaches or traditional villages that have little or no public transport options.
